This class will explore the American wine experience starting from the discovery of Vinland and European colonization of the new world. We will briefly study a number of grape species and hybrids that provide the basis for grape growing and wine making in America. Thomas Jefferson will provide us a fascinating look into wine at the beginnings of our country. From there we will move to the early hybrids of the northeast and then across the continent to California and the northwest. We will look into the impacts of Prohibition and how the industry survived to the point where there is now a winery in every state of the Union. Wine tasting will be an integral part of each meeting.

Sam Wai and Ron Ellingson have taught many wine courses through F/M Communiveristy and they are back by popular demand.

Carol Engelhardt
October 6, 20 & 27 2007; 2 - 4 p.m.
Riverview Place Scilley Room
No Charge, The North Dakota Humanities Council funds this course in part.

Gateway to the Northern Plains: Railroads and the Birth of Fargo & Moorhead” is the title of a new book by Dr. Carroll Engelhardt, retired professor of history at Concordia College. The period covered by the book is 1870 to 1900. Engelhardt notes that “Both Fargo and Moorhead were creatures of the Northern Pacific Railroad.” The hope was that like Omaha and Kansas City, Fargo and Moorhead would be portals to the Great West, a dream only partially realized. Engelhardt has combed the records for about twelve years, and so there will be plenty of anecdotes to add both humor and insight to the history of the two cities.
